Things to know about the famous Naulakha Bazaar in Agra

Posted By : admin/ 1100
  • The city of Agra in Uttar Pradesh is a potpourri of the diverse Indo-Islamic culture, whilst also conforming to the modern society.  While there are several places to explore in Agra, the Naulakha Bazaar, meaning ‘a market worth nine lakhs’ in English, offers a wholesome shopping experience for Indian fashion and food lovers.
  • This ever-bustling bazaar is located near Sadar Bazaar, another popular marketplace in Agra. Though tourists gather in large numbers in Naulakha Bazaar, its streets and bylanes are quite narrow like Delhi’s Chandni Chowk, so typical of Indian Bazaars.
  • The market’s speciality items include a range of imitation jewellery and ornamental showpieces which you can find in Loha Mandi, an area located within the Naulakha Bazaar. In addition to metal goods, you can find a number of shops that specialize in ethnic wear manufactured locally in Uttar Pradesh.
  • The Naulakha Bazaar is also popular for items made of timber. Besides, the local people purchase sundry items such as stationary and toys here.
  • Buying cosmetics in the market would require careful consideration, as most items are either fake or counterfeit of popular international brands. Because these cosmetics contain toxic chemicals, they can easily harm the skin. Shoppers here also look for sport shoes, mojris and leather slippers and sandals that come in attractive designs for all ages.
  • Bargaining for the right price is very much important at Naulakha Bazaar, which remains crowded from late morning hours (later than 10am) to even midnight during festival and peak season times.
  • The mouth-watering local street foods including chats, milkshakes, desserts, kebabs, et al are guaranteed to satiate your hunger pangs after you’re done wandering the narrow lanes of the bazaar.
  • The Naulakha Bazaar overall is a true reflection of the rich local culture and traditions of the city. Visiting the market can be an amazing experience, rest assured never to leave you disappointed.

Travel will live on….From the founder’s desk of Emperor Traveline – Part 1

Posted By : admin/ 636

I wrote a blog previously on a world without travel, and the response I received from the users made me write a sequel to it. There were many I would call them pessimists during the ongoing COVID-19 lockdown who asked me if the travel industry would ever survive after taking so many punches left, right and centre. I would still say, perhaps even more vociferously than before, that the best is yet to come. Patience holds the key to unlocking the revival of the industry within. Yes, let me repeat, within. What lies ahead lies in how the travel industry will shape itself in the days to come.

Technology, for instance, can play such a huge role in turning the tables on. Now, ask me how. There will be a paradigm shift to touchless or contactless travel and a new health safety regime, backed by digital tools will emerge for the safety of the travelers.

Say even if borders reopen, travelers must have full confidence that boarding a plane is absolutely safe and that they will make it to the destination without any hassle. New health safety protocols aided by innovative system needs to be configured in places, though these are yet to be defined. As governments and industry brace themselves to adapt to this fundamental shift in traveller behaviour, the use of biometric and digital identity technology will prove to be indispensible.  Only this can restore and instill a sense of confidence whilst also ensuring travellers experience a seamless journey.

All said and done, effectiveness is felt only if the user data is protected. Privacy, data transparency governance and consent may go a long way in ensuring the digital transformation of travel industry is seamless.

Don’t go away; there is more to come. But that’s for another day. Until then, stay indoors and stay safe.

Yercaud Flower Show – Places to visit in Yercaud

Posted By : admin/ 1030

With the poll code in place, the official announcement of the date for one of South India’s most popular Annual summer flower showers has been deferred to a future date. The charming and scenic hill station of Yercaud, also known as the “poor man’s Ooty”, is witnessing an increased influx of tourists. Though the dates for the annual summer festival haven’t been officially announced, the main venues of the festival are already thronged by thousands of locals and visitors from all across the country.

The officials have said that the flower show venues including Lake Park, Anna Park, Rose Park and Botanical Garden, are crowded with tourists from the neighbouring states of Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Kerala.

The officials have also said that the dates for the annual summer festival are being put off as the Model Code of Conduct is in place. Nevertheless, the Horticulture Department has kept the flower beds and lawns ready with the festival in mind.

Floral Formation

The Horticultural Department’s officials said that about 10 varieties of flowers will be arranged and already readied for exhibition this year, and more varieties may be considered depending on the floral formation to be put in place this year.

Flower varieties, including Dahlia, Salvia, Balsam, Chrysanthemum, Hydrangea, and Marigold, among others, have been installed in about 10,000 pots. Officials have also tended 15,000 flower saplings, preparing for the flower beds here.

All about the famous French War Memorial in Pondicherry

Goubert Avenue, the 1.5km seafront that runs along the beach, often dubbed the ‘Pride’ of Pondicherry, houses the famous French War Memorial, a must-visit place while you are in the erstwhile French colony of Pondicherry. The French War Memorial is built in the living memory of those valiant soldiers who sacrificed their lives for their country in World War I (1916-1919). Located close to the Gandhi statue, the French War Memorial is surrounded by eight pillars.

Every year on the 14th of July, the war memorial is brightly illuminated to commemorate the first French victory on Bastille Day in 1789. People from Pondicherry and other areas gather at the war memorial to pay homage to the soldiers in the line of duty.

Erected in 1937 and opened to public view on April 3, 1938, by the then Governor Crocicchia, the war memorial comprises a bronze bas-relief that represents the arrival of the Governor-General of French India Dupleix in Pondy in 1742. The statue of a soldier resting on a rifle that stands at the centre of four stark tall white columns— two on both sides is very much “life-like”, carrying French inscription ‘Aux combatants des Indes Francaises morts pour la Patrie, 1914 – 1918” over him.

The monument itself makes a fantastic sight, but the large sculptural metal plaque on its rear face can only be witnessed when the enclosing area is opened, as during the ceremony seen above. The monument is just a stone’s throw away from the beach, and you can take a good view from a fair distance. The magnificence and importance of the war memorial have caught the attention of several filmmakers. The landmark features in several scenes of the Bollywood comedy film ‘One Two Three’ (2008).

The French War Memorial in Puducherry

I don’t think the war memorial is built on a sprawling landscape, unlike most war memorials in other parts of the world – it is pretty small in area, yet an intriguing tourist destination. Visitors are usually restricted from walking into the grounds of the war memorial.

You can take a Gorimedu bound bus, auto-rickshaw or taxi either from the Bus Stand or the Railway station, and alight at the Government Hospital (GH). This touching war memorial is about 500 meters from the Bus stand.

Tourists in TajMahal Can Enjoy Aerial View With The New Heliport in Pipeline

Posted By : admin/ 1366

For tourists looking to enjoy an airborne view of Taj Mahal, India’s finest monument and one of the seven world wonders, the long wait is finally over. Thanks to the construction of a heliport by the tourism department of Agra on the Agra–Lucknow Expressway that would reduce the travel time considerably from the heliport to the 17th-century monument Taj Mahal, constructed by the great Mughal emperor Shah Jahan as a resting place for his favourite wife Mumtaz Mahal, as reported by ANI.

Mr Amit Kumar, deputy director of UP tourism, believes that the construction of a heliport will not only offer an aerial view of the monument but also that of the entire historical city of Agra. The helicopter, he added, would transport them to the site in just about 10–15 minutes.

Mr Kumar said that the helicopter operation would commence soon as the required land grants to construct the heliport have been approved by the Government authorities. He further added that lands have also been earmarked and would be granted approval soon for the heliport scheme in Mathura, Lucknow, Varanasi and Allahabad, in addition to Agra.

This will be a sort of different experience for the average tourist, who would have viewed the Taj Mahal only from the ground level an ariel view would warrant fun and adventure for all. This may also help the physically challenged, elderly and children who can take a panoramic view of the Taj Mahal below. It can be a tough ask to take children and the elderly around the entire complex. The heliport scheme can make light work of viewing the monument, in addition to saving travel time. As what will be a fillip to the tourism of the city, the heliport service comes as a relief to tourists who have less time to spare.

Do you know that the Hussain Sagar Buddha statue is the tallest monolithic statue of Siddhartha, also known as Gautama Buddha, the founder of Buddhism.  The statue situated at the famous Lumbini Park in Hussain Sagar Island can only be reached by boat. The Buddha Statue at Hussain Sagar in Hyderabad is an engineering marvel in that it is raised on a concrete platform, 15 feet tall, right in the middle of the lake. Dubbed the “Rock of Gibraltar”, the statue was erected in the middle of Lake Hussain Sagar with tremendous effort.  The city roads were widened for the construction of the statue.

BUDDHA STATUE AT HUSSAIN SAGAR

The statue was raised by N.T.Rama Rao was the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh between 1983 and 1989 at that time. He was inspired by the idea of the ‘Statue of Liberty’ and wanted to accomplish a similar feet back home. What motivated him further is that it would stand the test of time as a true representation of Indian culture, heritage, and unity. Lord Buddha became the ideal candidate for the mission.

Right from the beginning it was decided that the state would be made out of stone. After strenuous efforts, a solid white granite stone was unearthed near Nalgonda on a mountainside that is 40 miles outside the city of Hyderabad. It took a year for the project completion and the statue was finally unveiled in October 1985 by N.T.Rama Rao.

Temple architect and builder Ganapathi Sthapati with hundreds of workers worked on the statue. After five years of work, with a spend of about US$3 million, the stand stands tall at 58 feet (18m) and weighs 350 tons. This makes it the tallest monolithic Buddha. statue in the world.

Unfortunately, the N. T. Rama Rao led Andhra Pradesh Government was expelled in 1989 and the stone statue was kept waiting to be erected on the concrete platform until 1990. The statue was to be moved to the shore of Hussain Sagar by a trailer vehicle, the responsibility of which was given to a local company. But tragedy befell when the statue tipped suddenly due to a mishap and killed 10 engineers involved in the construction.

Efforts to move the statue out of Hussain Sagar lake persisted. The statue finally was erected on the platform successfully on 1 December 1992. The plan earlier was to enable the statue stand in the middle of the lake, but engineering hurdles stood in the way, as the statue today stands slightly closer to the NTR Memorial Gardens. In 2006, the Dalai Lama paid visit to the statue and consecrated it following a ritual which lent the place the status of a holy pilgrimage site.
